Simonetta, IMHO one of the most beautiful Roman-letter fonts ever conceived, was made available by Google in their selection of free web fonts. [See About Google Fonts for information about customization of the fonts supplied by Google.]

The original, source fonts, Simonetta and Simonetta Black (extended in formulating these new versions, SimonettaExt and SimonettaExt Black) are the inspired product of the designers at brownfox.org.

Brownfox has also produced other beautiful and noteworthy fonts, e.g.,
for Cyrillic [Original Garamond Cyrillic, Eras Cyrillic, and more],
for Armenian [Newton Armenian, Haykakan Kar, etc.],
as well as additional unique, modern Roman character-set fonts.

If you find these original fonts, or my extensions, useful, please support the efforts of those original artists at brownfox.org by purchasing from among their commercial font offerings.

The purposes of extending these fonts were manifold. The first was to augment the fonts’ glyph-set to include those required for the setting of historical texts and grammars: Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Old Norse, Gothic and full support for Classical Latin.

The second purpose (in support of reason #1) was to present a less confusing glyph for the italic a + e ligature called “ash”: . This was required because the original italic font’s glyph was not easily enough differentiable from the o + e ligature: . The two were simply too easily confused. The edited glyphs are more distinguishable: æ & œ.

The third reason was to provide stylish precomposed glyphs (supplying them in the assigned Unicode-codepoint positions) for all the Roman-based scripts used throughout Europe, particularly those of Latin-script using nations and peoples within the European Union. The extensions also support Chinese Pinyin, and are useful as well for some African and Native American languages.

These additions have been made more easily accessible through the Latin International keyboard map that I have also made available.

To these have been added the glyphs for the Roman numerals, for old-style numbers [“” vs. “0123456789”], and ligatures to support Old Style English text formatting, particularly those needed to support the long-sſ’ glyph. (This glyph is malformed in many sans serif—and even some “Roman”—typefaces: the ‘normal’ form must have the ‘nib’ protruding from the left-hand side of the upright, with nothing to the right; oppositely, the ‘italic’ form must never have this protruberance.) This functionality is supported specifically by the Old Style keyboard map.

The font zip-file also includes bold and bold italic formats of SimonettaExt. These were not part of the original Simonetta font set, but were generated from the regular and italic forms, and included in the zip file because emulated versions of fonts produced with those attributes on the fly will vary far too widely and undependably between applications, OS’s and platforms.

The vast majority of all the changes implemented within these extensions to Simonetta merely involve creation of precomposed combinations of diacritical marks (almost all from the original fonts) with letter-forms already within the original fonts. Every effort has been made to preserve the artistic vision of the original font’s creators.
